Arsenal have confirmed the signing of striker Victor Gyökeres from Sporting CP in a deal worth €65.7m initially, with €10.2m in bonuses. The 27-year-old signed a 5-year deal with the Premier League club.
The Swedish star’s arrival in North London has been long awaited, as Arsenal have been on the hunt for the ruthless No. 9 who can put them ahead in the Premier League.
Gyökeres scored 97 goals for Sporting since arriving from Coventry City for £17 million in 2023.
The striker’s sights have only been set on Arsenal for some time, rebuffing Manchester United’s attempts to negotiate a deal earlier in the transfer window.
The deal was thought to have fallen through, even as the Swede had already begun packing up his belongings in Portugal for the move to England, as the clubs found it difficult to agree on a deal. The player’s agent agreed to take a cut in commission to ensure the deal was done.
Arsenal have had a busy transfer window, having already signed Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and Kepa Arrizabalaga earlier in the window.
Will adding a goalscorer like Gyökeres finally get them over the line to win the Premier League in a season that is essentially now or never for Mikel Arteta’s men?
