Johor Darul Ta’zim have done it again and in the process, further cemented their status as the undisputed powerhouse of Malaysian football.
Under the vision and ambition of HRH Crown Prince Tunku Ismail, JDT lifted a fourth consecutive Malaysia Cup title on Friday night, defeating a resilient Kuching City side 2-0 at the iconic Bukit Jalil National Stadium. It was another chapter in a dynasty that continues to redefine standards in Southeast Asian football.
For long periods, Aidil Sharin’s spirited Kuching City frustrated the champions and threatened to produce one of the great cup final shocks. But elite teams find moments when it matters most, and JDT once again showed why they operate on a different level.
Brazilian forward Marcos Guilherme finally broke the deadlock in the 81st minute before Malaysian superstar Arif Aiman sealed the victory in stoppage time, sending the sea of Southern Tigers supporters into celebration. Stuart Wilkin even thought he had added a spectacular third late on, only for the goal to be ruled out.
The result was about far more than just another trophy.
JDT have now completed an extraordinary clean sweep of all four major domestic honours — the Charity Shield, FA Cup, Super League and Malaysia Cup, for a fourth consecutive season since 2022. It is a level of dominance rarely seen anywhere in world football.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that JDT’s success has never simply been about winning matches. The club have transformed the landscape of Malaysian football through investment, professionalism, infrastructure and long-term vision.
From world-class facilities to elite recruitment and youth development, JDT have created a blueprint that many clubs across Asia now aspire to follow. Under HRH Tunku Ismail’s leadership, the club have become not only champions, but a symbol of ambition and modernisation within the region.
