AS Monaco have announced the departure of their head coach Adi Hutter, with the club now reportedly pursuing Union Saint-Gilloise’s Sébastien Pocognoli as his successor.
Hutter’s departure comes after a mixed start to the season and an increasingly visible rift with his dressing room. Currently fifth in Ligue 1 with 13 points, Monaco have had a difficult few days, marked in particular by a heavy defeat away to newly promoted Lorient (3-1) and a hard-fought draw against Nice last weekend (2-2). In the Champions League, despite a draw against Manchester City (2-2), ASM currently rank 30th in the standings, with only one point earned after two games—including a 4-1 reverse against Club Brugge in their opening match.
Hutter was appointed to the Monaco bench in the summer of 2023 and led the club to two consecutive Champions League qualifications, finishing twice on the Ligue 1 podium (2nd in 2023-24 and 3rd in 2024-25).
Despite these good results, the Austrian never really managed to make his mark on a team that often disappointed on the pitch. This situation was not helped by Monaco’s summer transfer window, with Hutter reportedly expressing his bitterness at what he considered to be failed recruitment that weakened his squad.
To replace him, Monaco’s management are said to have first approached Edin Terzic (42), who has been out of work since leaving Borussia Dortmund in June 2024, but he allegedly refused to extend negotiations, before turning to Pocognoli. After joining Union Saint-Gilloise in 2024, the former defender led the Belgian club to their first league title in 90 years and qualified them for the Champions League this season.
