La Liga champions Barcelona have almost agreed a loan deal with Manchester United for Marcus Rashford. The deal includes a buy option. The English forward has been looking to leave Manchester United for some time, and United have been hoping to get him and four other players, including Sancho and Garnacho, off their books.

The United academy graduate, who made his debut in 2015, has not played for the Red Devils since December. In February, ESPN reported that he had been exiled by Amorim as he would not adapt to his new manager’s play style. In an interview, the Manchester United manager said “The case was some of the guys don’t adapt the way I see football, the other guys adapt, and we are trying to build the team”.

The 27-year-old went to Aston Villa on loan in February 2025 after falling out of favour with Manchester United’s management. During his stint at Villa he made 17 appearances and scored 4 goals.

The Athletic reported at the beginning of 2025 that Rashford wanted the move to Barcelona. A desire mentioned a few weeks earlier by the interested party himself.

“For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps,” he said in an interview.

Marcus Rashford had a day off today so he returned to his old primary school, Button Lane, south Manchester, and handed out 420 Christmas presents to all the pupils. It was a long-planned event, eliciting delight from the children. One boy scarcely more than four years old, had a…

Why do Barcelona want Rashford?

La Liga giants have been seeking more attacking strength during this Summer transfer window. Hansi Flick, during an interview in May, said “This is what we have talked about with the club. In the last matches maybe we did not have a lot of options in that position so we have to bring more options to the team and more quality. This is the job from Deco, is clear, and I will support him.”

Barcelona first sought the services of both Nico Williams, who opted to stay at Bilbao, and Luis Diaz, who Liverpool insisted was not for sale.

While Rashford was not Barcelona’s first choice, the move still illustrates the financial circumstances of the club and their need for more strength up front. It is unlikely that Rashford will play on the left wing. Raphinha will not be moved to a 10 position, especially with the density of 10s that Barcelona have at their disposal.

It is much more likely that Rashford would play in the centre forward position. Lewandowski only has 1 year left on his contract at Barcelona and it’s highly likely that his retirement is on the horizon. Barcelona may see Rashford as a longer-term option up front, his pace and ability to stretch defences may be vital to Flick’s plans for the new season.

This move should prove to be fruitful for both the English international and the Spanish giants. The change of scenery might allow Rashford to gain confidence and rebuild his form after a difficult spell with United.

Jadon Sancho’s return to Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 season, though only a loan, saw the 25-year-old rediscover his spark, especially in the Champions League. Could Rashford’s move to Spain spark a similar revival?
