Liverpool have confirmed the departure of centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a five-year deal worth £35m.

Quansah, 22, impressed as part of the England squad who triumphed at the Euro Under-21 last Month but struggled for a starting place at Liverpool, as Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté became Arne Slot’s preferred centre-back pairing.

This marks the third transfer of the summer between the two clubs, with Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz joining the Premier League champions. Despite his lack of game time at Liverpool, they clearly see Quansah as a player of huge potential, so a a buy-back clause has been included as part of the deal.

An added bonus for Liverpool is that, as an Academy player, the transfer fee will be recorded as ‘pure’ profit under profit and sustainability rules (PSR). With lingering doubts over the future of Ibrahima Konaté, the fee could aid in their pursuit of a potential replacement, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi known to be of interest.

Leverkusen will be excited to snap up such a promising defender, who managed 58 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring three goals.
