Roberto De Zerbi has described the second penalty awarded to Real Madrid against Marseille as “shameful”. “It’s not justified. It’s shameful. And I would have said the same even if it had gone my way,” the Italian coach fumed during the post-game press conference.

His frustration is understandable, given that Facundo Medina was penalised for a handball when he was actually tackling an opponent.

“Unbelievable. It was never a penalty. I think you know that better than I do, but the day before, Real Madrid made a lot of noise. I don’t want to stir up more controversy, but it was never a penalty,” he added to CBS Sports Golazo.

“Incredible…it’s never a penalty.” 🗣️

After holding out for 80 minutes, thanks in large part to the immense Geronimo Rulli, who made 13 saves during the match, Olympique de Marseille finally broke down following the controversial penalty converted by Kylian Mbappe. It was the Frenchman’s second goal of the night, having scored Madrid’s equaliser after Timothy Weah had given Marseille the lead in the 22nd minute.

Thanks to their victory, Real Madrid have provisionally moved up to fourth place in the league table. OM, meanwhile, are 33rd.
