Jamie Vardy to Rangers? Rumors Resurface as Leicester Legend Nears Exit
Jamie Vardy’s time at Leicester City is coming to an end. The 38-year-old striker—who has been a key figure in the club’s most iconic era—is set to depart this summer as the Foxes prepare for life outside the Premier League.
The Championship title and FA Cup winner, Premier League champion, and Champions League veteran has spent 13 unforgettable years at the King Power Stadium, but following Leicester’s relegation, the club has opted for a rebuild—one that does not include their legendary No. 9.
Uncertain Future for Vardy
Despite whispers of retirement, Vardy has yet to confirm his next move. He may be in the twilight of his career, but he still managed seven league goals in a struggling Leicester side this season—proof that there’s fuel left in the tank.
Several options have been floated, including a move to MLS or even to Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham. But one intriguing link has re-emerged: a switch to Rangers.
A Move 14 Years in the Making?
Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist recently revealed he tried to sign Vardy back in 2012, when the striker was tearing up the National League with Fleetwood Town. McCoist sent scouts to watch Vardy during his 31-goal season but couldn’t come up with the funds to secure a deal.
Just months later, Vardy made the £1 million move to Leicester—and the rest is history. Meanwhile, financial turmoil forced Rangers into administration, and the club restarted its football journey from the bottom tier of Scottish football.
Now, over a decade later, could that long-forgotten move finally come to life?
Gascoigne Weighs In
Rumours reignited this week after respected transfer journalist Ekrem Konur reported that Rangers were once again exploring the idea of bringing Vardy to Ibrox. Rangers and England legend Paul Gascoigne has added his voice to the conversation—and he’s all for it.
“He’s been a brilliant servant to Leicester and when you see him playing, you wouldn’t think he’s that age,” Gascoigne said. “Vardy seems like the type of guy who’s got his head screwed on and I don’t think he has any problems.
“But Rangers are a tough team to play for, they expect to be winning every game but I’m sure he’d score some goals up there. Especially because he’s still got that pace.”
Gascoigne’s backing is significant. Few know the demands of playing at Ibrox better than Gazza, and his faith in Vardy speaks volumes.
Can Vardy Succeed in Scotland?
There’s no shortage of cautionary tales when it comes to aging Premier League stars heading north. Joey Barton, Freddie Ljungberg, and Ian Wright all struggled to adapt to the intensity of Old Firm football.
But one man bucked that trend—Jermaine Defoe.
Defoe joined Rangers in 2019 under Steven Gerrard, aged 36, and went on to have a fruitful spell at the club. While often used from the bench, he still managed 32 goals in 74 games and played a crucial role in mentoring Alfredo Morelos. His contributions were vital in Rangers’ unbeaten title-winning campaign in 2020/21.
Vardy could follow that blueprint—an experienced head leading the line, guiding younger teammates, and still finding the net when called upon.
What Comes Next?
Rangers remain without a permanent manager as the club’s takeover process continues. But with Kevin Thelwell now in place as Director of Football, plans for next season are already taking shape.
And if Vardy wants one final challenge, a move to Glasgow could offer just that: a passionate fanbase, a fierce rivalry, and the chance to add another chapter to a truly remarkable career.
One thing’s for sure—if Jamie Vardy does end up at Ibrox, Scottish football will be all the better for it.
