Monaco drown, not Lens: What happened on Matchday 6 of Ligue 1?

Given the first few weekends of competition, how could anyone not be excited about the sixth round of the 2025–26 Ligue 1 season? Quite simply, it would have been impossible.

Especially with such enticing fixtures as Strasbourg vs Marseille and Lille vs Lyon. However, it seems dishonest not to acknowledge that the excitement has died down a little ahead of this new European week. But will it bounce back in the near future? Certainly.

A landmark Metz-Le Havre event

It wasn’t because of its — weak — content or the excitement surrounding it that the match between Metz and Le Havre was chosen as the match of the weekend by the Sports Talk United editorial team. No, the reason for its selection lies rather in its result. Strange for a match that ended 0-0, right? Perhaps.

Muet. #FCMHAC pic.twitter.com/M5PkEtXZ12

But the result is symbolic. It marks the end of a series of 53 consecutive Ligue 1 matches in which at least one goal was scored in each game. The longest wait for a goalless draw in the top flight since 1955-1956 (0-0 between Sochaux and Nice on matchday 10) — according to Opta.

Heroic Lens, apathetic Rennes

However, it only took a few hours to find the second of the 2025-26 season. In Brittany, neither Rennes nor Lens managed to beat the opposing goalkeeper. Consequently, the Sang et Or may have some regrets, despite being reduced to 10 men just 48 seconds into the game following a foul by Jonathan Gradit on Seko Fofana.

In fact, it was Pierre Sage’s men who seemed to be playing with 11 players. And not only in terms of chances created and scoring opportunities, but also on a purely footballing and physical level. A draw that feels like a win for the Northerners, who will try to extend their unbeaten run at Auxerre on Saturday.

Storm Pagis sweeps through Monaco

A solo slalom through the opposition penalty area and an exceptional instinctive one-touch finish. That’s how Pablo Pagis, son of Mickael, an emblematic figure in Ligue 1 in the 2000s, single-handedly (or almost) brought AS Monaco to their knees on the pitch in Lorient. A brace, his second and third goals of the season, ensured his team returned to winning ways after a month without a victory.

“My father scored quite a few, so you could say I’m following in his footsteps,” he smiled after the match. “I’m a bit like him as a player. We play in the same position and have similarities. He inspires me. I have the same feel for the game.”
