AS Monaco have announced the arrival of Ansu Fati from FC Barcelona. The 22-year-old Spanish international has joined the Principality on loan with an option to buy. According to various reports, the purchase price would approach €11m.

The move is both a coup and a gamble for the third-placed team in Ligue 1 last season, who have already added the experienced Eric Dier and Paul Pogba to their ranks so far this summer.

A product of the Masia youth academy, Fati had a sparkling start to his career, making his professional debut at the age of 16 years and 10 months and breaking several records. Enough even to be considered one of the great hopefuls of world football.

Unfortunately, the young forward has not been able to build on this status, as he has been plagued by injuries in recent years. On loan at Brighton during the 2023-24 season, the Spanish international struggled to make an impact, scoring just four goals in 27 games.

After returning to Barcelona last summer, he was once again sidelined for much of the season, making just six La Liga appearances (232 minutes played) in Barça’s quest for the league title.

Now at Monaco, Fati will have the opportunity to relaunch his career at a club that is competitive both domestically and internationally, and where the pressure is undoubtedly less than at other destinations to which his name has been linked in recent weeks.
